ಹುರಳಿಕಾಳು ಸಾರು, ಪಲ್ಯ ~ Huralikaalu Saaru , Palya

Huralikattina Saaru

This saaru/Bassaru/Kattina saaru made by horse gram/Huralikaalu is not only tastier but healthier too. There are few varieties while making saaru, here am giving one of them.
Ingredients:
Horse gram/Hurali kallu : 1 - 2 cup(depending on requirement)
Onion : 2 (one for saaru & another for palya)
Green chillies, Red chillies : few
Garlic : 4 -5 cloves
Fresh/ dry coconut : grated or pieces ( abt a spoon for saaru)
Curry leaves : few
Cumin seeds : 1 tsp
Mustard seeds : 1/2 tsp
Tamarind juice : to the taste
Jaggery : as per taste
Method :
Wash the horse gram, pressure cook it with 3 - 4 cups of water. Let it cook for 4 - 5 whistles.
Once done, drain the kattu/watery syrup to an vessel, keep it aside.

Keep the boiled gram in another vessel.

Now, take an onion, chop it in to pieces.
Dry roast the chopped onion pieces, cloves of garlic, mustard seeds, jeera, curry leaves, coriander leaves, dry/fresh coconut or another option to coconut is uchhellu pudi, green or red chilies or red chilly powder will do. Let the mixture get cooled. Now grind the mixture coarsely adding small amount of water.

If you want to make saaru thick one, you can add a tbsp of boiled horse gram while grinding masala.

Now masala is  ready.

Add  few spoons of boiled horse gram to the ground masala, if you want to chew those grams while having rice.

Mix it well

Now take a vessel, add a tsp of oil, mustard seeds, when it starts spluttering, add curry leaves, add the ground masala, add the watery syrup that kept aside, add tamarind juice, jaggery, salt to the taste, bring it to boil.

Now to make palya, chop an onion.
Take a vessel, add 2 tsp of oil, mustard seeds, when it starts spluttering, add curry leaves, cut green chilies, onion pieces. Fry until the onion loses its rawness.
Now add boiled, drained horse gram. add salt let every thing cook for few mins.

Add coriander leaves, & grated coconut.

Saaru goes well with Ragi mudde also.

Serve hot. This method is easy one with less masala, in future will try to add other varieties too.
